Why It Matters

Why authors are walking away from bulk printing

Ask any first-time author what scares them most about getting a book printed, and it’s rarely the writing. It’s the math.

Order a thousand copies from a traditional press and the price per book looks wonderful — right up until you’re the one with forty boxes stacked in a spare room, wondering if you’ll ever sell past copy six hundred. Print on demand turns that risk on its head. Nothing rolls off our machines at MilanPOD until somebody has actually asked for it. One reader buys one book, we print one book. Ten readers order on the same Tuesday afternoon, we print ten.

There’s no stockpile gathering dust in a Daryaganj godown, and there’s no upfront bill that has to clear before a single page gets bound. Authors get to put their book in front of readers directly — Amazon, Flipkart, their own website, a stall at a book fair — without first convincing a traditional publisher to take a chance on them.

That’s the whole pitch, honestly. Quality digital book printing, priced sensibly for small runs, with binding, lamination and cover work handled in the same building, so you’re dealing with one vendor instead of four.

What It Means

What “print on demand” actually means for your book

Print on demand is digital book printing triggered by a real order, not a fixed run size decided months in advance. The moment digital presses got sharp enough for short runs, this stopped being a compromise and became the default for most first books.

Compare Traditional offset printing Print on demand
Typical minimum order 500–1,000+ copies 1 copy, and up from there
Money tied up before a sale The full print run, paid upfront Only the copies actually ordered
Where unsold stock lives Your storeroom, or a paid warehouse Nowhere — it’s simply never printed
Reprinting after an edit New plates, a fresh minimum run Upload the corrected file, print the next order
Best suited for Large, confirmed quantities New authors, short runs, testing demand

To be fair to offset printing, it still wins on price once you’re confidently ordering several hundred copies in one go — a school placing a bulk textbook order, say. Print on demand earns its keep everywhere below that line, which, for most authors publishing their first or second book, is most of the time.

What We Print

Five ways we print on demand

Not every book is a novel. Here’s what tends to be running through our presses on any given week.

01

On-Demand Book Printing

Send a file today, get a quote, and we print the next time you need stock — three copies for a launch event or three hundred ahead of a school term. No standing order, no annual contract, no penalty for ordering small.

02

Print On Demand Board Books

Thick board pages for picture books and early readers, with covers printed and laminated in-house. New children’s-book authors don’t need a 2,000-copy commitment just to hold a finished copy.

03

Print On Demand Journals

Lined, dotted, or blank pages — paper stock, binding and lamination are yours to choose. Useful for planners, guided journals and branded diaries as much as personal writing projects.

04

Print On Demand Magazines

Got a self-published magazine idea? We print short runs without the setup cost of a web press, so an independent title can exist before it has a thousand subscribers behind it.

05

Print On Demand Catalogs

Product catalogs printed in the quantity you can actually distribute this quarter — not a pallet that goes stale by the time the next season’s range arrives.

06

Not sure which one fits?

Tell us the page count, size and how many you need to start with. We’ll tell you straight whether print on demand or a larger offset run makes more sense for your book.

Job Specifications

What goes into each book

Three questions decide most of a print run before it ever touches a machine: what paper, what binding, what size. Here’s the range we work within most often.

Paper
70–100 GSM uncoated for text pages, the same weight most paperback novels use. 250–300 GSM card for covers.
Binding
Perfect bound (glued spine, standard paperback), saddle-stitched (stapled, for thin journals), spiral / wiro (workbooks), or case bound (sewn hardcover).
Sizes
A5 and 5.5×8.5 in for novels, A4 for manuals and catalogs, custom trims on request.
Finish
Gloss or matte lamination on covers, with foil or spot UV available on request.

These are the specs we quote against most often — if your manuscript needs something outside this list, send us the brief and we’ll tell you what’s possible.

The Order Process

STEP 04

Printed, bound, shipped

Tracked courier, anywhere in India or overseas, comfortably inside the deadline you gave us.

Why MilanPOD

Why authors keep coming back

No inventory to manage

Print three copies this month and thirty next month. Nothing sits on a shelf waiting between orders, and nothing ties up your savings.

One roof, not four vendors

Binding, lamination, sewing and cover printing all happen in the same building, so your book isn’t waiting on somebody else’s schedule.

Sell well beyond Daryaganj

Books printed for Amazon, Flipkart and direct-to-reader sales all ship the same way, so distribution doesn’t have to dictate how many you print.

Every trim size we stock

Pocket-sized poetry chapbooks to full-page textbooks — the press doesn’t much care which one you bring in.

About Milan Digital Print

Twenty years of printing out of Daryaganj

Daryaganj has been Delhi’s book district since long before most of our clients were born — the Sunday book bazaar along Netaji Subhash Marg has traded books for decades, and the lanes around it are still where a good share of the city’s printing and binding gets done. Milan Digital Print has run its presses from inside that neighbourhood for over twenty years, which means our team has spent two decades doing little else but books: paperback novels, school journals, board books, the occasional thick reference text that needed a hardcover spine strong enough to survive a library shelf.

That kind of repetition matters more than it sounds like it should. A printer who sees a handful of books a year ends up guessing at paper weight and binding choice. Ours don’t have to guess — they’ve already solved the same problem a hundred times over.

We work with first-time authors publishing their first manuscript, and with small publishing houses that need a dependable short-run partner alongside their main offset orders. Either way, the file goes through the same prepress checks, the same machines, and the same binding line.

In Authors’ Words

What authors say

I didn’t want to gamble a year’s savings on a print run for my first novel. Starting with twenty copies and reordering as readers came in made the whole thing feel possible.

— Johny Prasad

We needed sample copies before our school finalised a workbook order. Turnaround was quick enough that the academic session wasn’t held up waiting on us.

— Prakash Yadav

Our branded diaries needed a specific binding and a deadline that couldn’t slip. Both were handled without a single follow-up call from our side.

Common Questions

Print on demand books — questions authors actually ask

What is print on demand book printing?

It’s digital book printing triggered by an actual order rather than a fixed print run decided in advance. You upload a print-ready file, and a copy is printed, bound and shipped only once someone — you or a reader — has placed an order, so no stock sits unsold in storage.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No. You can order a single copy to check quality before a launch, then reorder five, fifty or five hundred as sales come in. Per-copy pricing stays roughly the same whether you order one or a hundred.

How long does printing and delivery take?

Most print on demand orders are printed, bound and dispatched within a few working days of approving your file and payment, depending on quantity, binding type and page count. Courier transit across India typically adds another two to five days.

Can I edit my book after the first print run?

Yes — that’s one of the real advantages of digital printing. Upload a corrected file and the next order prints the updated version. There’s no leftover stock of an old edition forcing you to sell through outdated copies first.

What binding and paper options are available?

Perfect binding for standard paperbacks, saddle stitching for thin journals and magazines, spiral or wiro binding for workbooks, and case binding for hardcover textbooks and keepsake editions. Interior paper typically runs 70–100 GSM, with 250–300 GSM card for covers, plus gloss or matte lamination.

Do you ship print on demand books outside India?

Yes. Books are dispatched through trusted courier partners across India and internationally, so authors selling to readers outside the country aren’t restricted to local distribution.

Can I sell my print on demand books on Amazon or Flipkart?

Yes. Books printed through MilanPOD can be listed and sold on Amazon, Flipkart or any other marketplace, as well as directly from your own website — printing on demand doesn’t tie you to a single sales channel.

Is print on demand lower quality than offset printing?

Not for the run sizes it’s built for. The digital presses used for print on demand produce sharp text and accurate colour for small to medium quantities; offset printing only pulls ahead on cost once you’re confidently ordering several hundred copies at a time.

Do you help with cover design or formatting?

Yes. Our design desk checks manuscript formatting and can help with cover layout at no extra charge before your file goes to press, so authors without design experience aren’t left to work out bleed and margins alone.
